What is a UTI?
A urinary tract infection (UTI) occurs when bacteria enter the urinary tract and multiply. The urinary tract includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. While UTIs can affect any part of this system, they most commonly involve the bladder and urethra. Women are particularly prone to UTIs due to the shorter length of their urethra, which makes it easier for bacteria to reach the bladder.
Most UTIs are caused by the bacteria Escherichia coli (E. coli), which normally lives in the intestines. When these bacteria spread to the urinary tract, they can cause inflammation and infection. If left untreated, a UTI can lead to more serious complications, so it's important to recognize the symptoms and seek treatment promptly.

What are my treatment options?
Treatment for UTIs typically involves antibiotics, which can quickly and effectively eliminate the infection. Your healthcare provider will choose an antibiotic based on the type of bacteria causing your infection and your medical history. It's important to take the full course of antibiotics as prescribed, even if you start feeling better before the medication is finished.
In addition to antibiotics, there are several self-care measures you can take to help alleviate symptoms and prevent future infections. Drinking plenty of water can help flush out bacteria from your urinary tract. Avoiding irritants such as caffeine, alcohol, and spicy foods can also reduce discomfort. It's also helpful to urinate frequently and completely empty your bladder each time.
